Wilmer Iris Scissors 9 cm S/S Angled
The Wilmer Iris Scissors 9 cm S/S Angled is an ophthalmic scissors instrument built from German-grade surgical stainless steel, measuring 9 cm in total length, among the most compact instruments in the surgical scissors range. Both blade tips terminate in extremely fine sharp points, the S/S configuration delivering active tissue incision on both blade ends simultaneously. The blade pair offsets at approximately 45° at the blade-to-shank junction, angling the fine tips away from the handle axis. The blade body is exceptionally narrow and slender in cross-section, noticeably finer than any general operating scissor. Symmetric finger rings of equal diameter sit on both arms, connected by a rivet screw joint at the pivot point.
The angled blade geometry of the wilmer iris scissors positions both fine sharp tips parallel to ocular and conjunctival surfaces during the cutting stroke, keeping the surgeon’s hand clear of the orbital rim while maintaining direct tip-to-tissue contact. Named after Dr. William Holland Wilmer, founder of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins, this instrument reflects the delicate access requirements of anterior segment ophthalmic surgery.
Ophthalmic surgeons and plastic surgeons use the Wilmer Iris Scissors 9 cm S/S Angled for conjunctival flap elevation, episcleral tissue dissection, Tenon’s capsule entry during strabismus surgery, and iris tissue manipulation during anterior segment procedures. These iris scissors angled are also used in rhinoplasty for fine cartilage trimming and alar tissue dissection where the compact 9 cm format and angled blade give better access in narrow nasal anatomical zones than standard operating scissors.
Leader Surgical produces this instrument with blade-gap tolerances measured in fractions of a millimeter, the manufacturing standard required when both sharp tips operate within the confined space of the anterior eye chamber, where any blade-gap inconsistency translates directly to uncontrolled tissue contact.
What does “S/S” stand for?
It indicates the tip configuration is Sharp/Sharp. Both blade tips are pointed and sharp to allow for extremely fine, controlled incisions in delicate tissue.
