Retraction Cord Packer 1.5mm

The Retraction Cord Packer 1.5mm is a double-ended dental hand instrument constructed from medical-grade 304 stainless steel. It features a centrally knurled, cylindrical handle that provides a firm, non-slip grip during intraoral use. Both working ends are angled and carry a 1.5mm-wide, non-serrated, smooth-faced tip with a 0.20mm tip diameter. The angled shanks on each end are offset at opposing angles, allowing access to both anterior and posterior sulcular regions without repositioning the hand.

Retraction cord packers of this type are non-serrated to allow atraumatic cord placement without tearing gingival tissue. The instrument withstands repeated autoclave sterilization cycles at temperatures up to 134°C (273°F) and is also compatible with chemical disinfection and dry-heat sterilization. A passivation treatment applied to the steel surface strengthens its corrosion resistance. The balanced, lightweight build reduces finger fatigue during extended procedures and maintains dimensional stability across repeated clinical use cycles.

The retraction cord packer instrument is used primarily by prosthodontists and restorative dentists during crown and bridge preparation and fixed prosthetic impression procedures. The clinician places the angled tip against the gingival retraction cord and applies controlled lateral-downward pressure to pack the cord into the gingival sulcus, displacing soft tissue apically and laterally. This exposes the subgingival preparation margin, giving the impression material access to a clean, dry, sulcular environment for an accurate final impression.

How to choose retraction cord size?
According to its size, we have different thickness of retraction cord (color coded thickness); ➢ Black – 000 ➢ Yellow – 00 Both are recommended for anterior teeth with minimal crevicular space. Also can be used as a primary cord for the double cord technique. ➢ Purple – 0 ➢ Blue – 1 Both are recommended for bicuspids.
