The Modified Periosteal Elevator is constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with a knurled cylindrical handle approximately 18.5 cm in total length. Two asymmetric working ends define this instrument; one carrying a wide, flat chisel-style blade for broad tissue support, and the opposing end featuring a narrow-curved spoon-shaped blade for confined access and initial periosteal separation. Both working ends receive a blue titanium nitride coating applied via physical vapor deposition, producing the distinctive blue surface finish that increases tip hardness, reduces surface friction, and creates clear visual contrast against the pale surgical field.
Based on the well-established modified prichard periosteal elevator design, this instrument addresses the full spectrum of mucoperiosteal flap reflection within a single double-ended configuration. The wide flat blade provides broad leverage for retracting full-thickness flaps across posterior and extended surgical sites, while the narrow-curved end handles initial periosteal incision and tissue separation in confined interdental or anterior zones. The blue TiN coating resists debris adhesion and corrosive degradation through repeated autoclave sterilization cycles at 134°C without surface loss.
Periodontists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons use this periosteal elevator for implant surgery, guided bone regeneration, and full-thickness flap procedures. Following the crestal or sulcular incision, the surgeon introduces the curved end to initiate periosteal separation, then transitions to the flat wide blade to reflect and retract the mucoperiosteal flap completely, exposing the underlying alveolar bone for implant site preparation, bone grafting, or membrane placement.
Oral surgical teams building instrument trays for high-volume implant practices trust Leader Surgical to supply instruments where coating integrity, blade geometry, and handle balance are sourced with the same attention to detail their patients deserve.
What is a periosteal elevator used for?
The Periosteal Elevator is crafted specifically to remove soft tissue layers from the bone. This elevator is available in various models with 1 straight blunt end and either a sharply rounded end or a blunt curved end, making it ideally suited for a range of surgical situations and requirements for surgeons.
