Groove Thermal Forming Plier
The Groove Thermal Forming Plier (Article# LS8-140) is constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with a satin finish across the body and handles. The instrument features a circular pivot-pin joint at the mid-body, connecting two flat, broad beaks fitted with opposing notched groove-cutting tips. These matched tip faces close together to press a clean, defined channel into thermoplastic aligner material when the working end is heated. The flat beak geometry distributes forming force evenly across the elastic groove, producing a consistent slot depth without deforming surrounding aligner plastic.
The Orthodontic Groove Thermal Forming Plier operates on a tip-heat-only principle, only the working ends are heated before application, keeping handle temperature safe during chairside use. The circular box-joint pivot maintains jaw alignment across repeated closure cycles, preventing tip offset. The instrument is fully autoclavable, tolerating standard steam sterilization at 134°C without corrosion or dimensional change. The corrosion-resistant stainless-steel body withstands repeated sterilization cycles, making it suitable for long-term multipatient clinical use.
Orthodontists use the Groove Thermal Forming Plier during clear aligner therapy to create a precisely formed groove at the gingival margin of the aligner tray at any tooth position requiring elastic attachment. The clinician heats the beak tip, positions it at the marked gingival border of the aligner compartment, and applies controlled compression to press a defined channel into the thermoplastic material. This groove anchors the orthodontic elastic, preventing displacement when the patient seats or removes the aligner during intermaxillary correction treatment.
Leader Surgical has a longstanding track record of putting the right instruments in clinicians’ hands, and this Forming Plier reflects exactly that commitment, giving orthodontists a dependable chairside solution for elastic slot modification without returning trays to the laboratory.
Which side of the plier should I heat?
Always heat only the protruding “finger” side. Do not heat the receiver side, as it is often not tempered and can break under high heat.
