Allen End-Cutting Intrasulcular Knife
Double-ended intrasulcular knife with tip-cutting blades for controlled soft tissue release in minimally invasive periodontal procedures.
Key Features:
• Double-ended design with opposing angled blades for anterior and posterior access
• Tip-cutting edges only; lateral blade surfaces remain non-cutting
• Thin, narrow blade profile for intrasulcular navigation
• Enables incision from sulcus base to alveolar crest without surface laceration
• Angulated shanks support controlled apical blade direction
• Ringed knurled handle for secure, non-slip grip
• Minimizes trauma to sulcular walls during insertion
• Surgical-grade stainless steel construction, autoclavable at 134°C

The Allen End-Cutting Intrasulcular Knife is a double-ended soft tissue instrument designed by Dr. Edward P. Allen, constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with two thin, narrow blades angled in opposing directions from the central handle axis. Each blade carries a sharp cutting edge only at the terminal tip, the lateral sides remain deliberately dull allowing the blade to travel within the sulcus and sever the junctional attachment from the base of the sulcus to the alveolar crest without cutting the surrounding sulcular walls. The two opposing end angles give the clinician anterior and posterior access from a single instrument without switching. The ringed knurled handle provides a non-slip grip for controlled apical pressure during the initial incision phase.
The Allen End-Cutting Knife differs from conventional periodontal knives through its end-only cutting geometry. Standard side-cutting knives engage tissue along their entire blade length, risking laceration of sulcular walls during intrasulcular navigation. This instrument’s dull sides pass through the sulcus safely, concentrating the cut only at the tip. The stainless-steel body is fully autoclavable and maintains blade sharpness through repeated sterilization cycles.
Periodontists use the Allen End-Cutting Intrasulcular Knife as the first step in the pouch and tunnel technique for root coverage. The surgeon inserts one blade end intrasulcularly at each recession site, directing the tip apically from the sulcus floor to the crestal bone to sever the soft tissue attachment. This creates the initial entry point through which the pouch is then developed subperiosteally across adjacent teeth without any surface incisions.
The allen intrasulcular knife double-ended format covers the full surgical arch in one instrument. Leader Surgical produces this knife to consistent blade geometry, verified stainless steel composition, and sterilization-safe finishing standards.
How does the “end-cutting” design benefit surgery?
The end-cutting blade is typically thin and sharp only at the tip, often with unsharpened sides. This design allows the clinician to perform controlled cutting at the base of the sulcus or along the alveolar crest without damaging the adjacent sulcular walls or healthy surrounding tissue. This supports atraumatic soft-tissue management and cleaner surgical margins.
