The 3/4 Machtou Root Canal Plugger is a double-ended endodontic instrument designed by Professor and Doctor Pierre Machtou, carrying two differently sized working ends — 0.80mm diameter on one end and 1.10mm diameter on the other, measured 1mm from the tip. Both ends are flat-tipped and slightly tapered, built to compact gutta-percha vertically without binding against dentinal walls. The instrument shank carries depth markings at 5mm intervals for monitoring penetration during obturation. The handle, visible in the Fig.3/4 profile, features a gold-toned knurled barrel with ringed grip sections supporting a firm modified-pen grasp during repeated compaction strokes.
The instrument is constructed from high-quality stainless steel, maintaining tip diameter and flatness through multiple autoclave cycles. Unlike Periodontal Probes – Explorers, which carry pointed tips for detection and measurement, this plugger uses a blunt, smooth working face that applies direct apical pressure to softened material. The two differing tip sizes eliminate instrument switching between the coronal and middle thirds during down-packing. Explorers serve diagnostic functions; this plugger is strictly an operative obturation instrument.
Endodontists use the 3/4 Machtou Root Canal Plugger during warm vertical condensation of gutta-percha, specifically for compacting the coronal and middle thirds of the root canal. After a heated instrument softens the master cone, the clinician seats the 1.10mm end at the orifice and drives it apically with short vertical strokes. The 0.80mm end then addresses the narrower middle third of the canal.
The Root Canal Plugger series from Leader Surgical reflects a commitment to dimensional accuracy, verified stainless steel composition, and sterilization-safe gold-tone surface finishing — giving endodontists a dependable, consistent instrument across every obturation procedure.
How does the “Explorer” end assist in procedures?
The explorer features a sharp, flexible tip used to locate canal openings, detect pulp stones, and identify surface irregularities or cracks in the tooth. It provides critical tactile feedback to the clinician.
