The McCall Universal Curettes set includes three double-ended instruments — 13/14, 13/14S, and 17/18 — each carrying universal blades with two sharp cutting edges on both sides converging at a rounded toe. The terminal shank on each variant measures 1.1 mm in diameter and 9 mm in length, with the blade set at 90 degrees to the shank face — allowing the same working end to adapt to mesial and distal tooth surfaces without switching instruments. The 13/14S carries a thinner, shorter terminal shank than the standard 13/14, reducing tissue displacement during insertion into tighter sulcular spaces. The 17/18 features a strongly curved, elongated shank with multiple bends that reduce opposing arch interference during posterior access. All three handles follow a round knurled pattern machined from surgical-grade stainless-steel, tolerating autoclave sterilization at 134°C without dimensional distortion.

The universal blade geometry on each mccall universal curette differs from area-specific Gracey designs — both cutting edges remain active, and the blade face sits perpendicular to the shank rather than offset. This allows a single instrument to scale both proximal surfaces of any tooth by simply rotating the handle between strokes without repositioning the working end against the root surface.

Dental hygienists and periodontists use McCall Universal Curettes during supragingival and subgingival scaling, root planing, and periodontal maintenance appointments across all tooth surfaces. The mccall curettes 17/18 excels on distal surfaces of second molars and sites adjacent to extracted third molars, while the 13/14 and 13/14S handle anterior and premolar regions where sulcular access demands a narrower blade profile.

Leader Surgical has built a reputation that clinicians across specialties consistently rely on — delivering instruments that hold up through demanding caseloads and repeated sterilization cycles without compromising their working geometry.

What is the difference between McCall and Gracey curettes?
McCall curettes are universal, meaning one instrument can be used on all tooth surfaces due to its two cutting edges. Gracey curettes are area-specific, having only one functional cutting edge tilted at a 70° angle for precision in specific regions.
