Allen End-Cutting Knife

Double-ended intrasulcular knife with tip-cutting blades for controlled soft tissue release during minimally invasive periodontal procedures.

Key Features:
• Double-ended design with differently angled blades for anterior and posterior access
• Tip-cutting blades with cutting edge only at terminal end
• Blade widths approximately 3.5 mm and 8 mm working length
• Dull lateral blade surfaces reduce risk of sulcular wall trauma
• Designed for intrasulcular incisions without surface tissue disruption
• Angulated shanks support precise apical blade direction within sulcus
• Round ringed knurled handle for stable pen grip control
• Surgical-grade stainless steel construction, autoclavable at 134°C

The Allen End-Cutting Knife is a double-ended intrasulcular soft tissue instrument developed by Dr. Edward P. Allen, constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel with two thin, narrow blades — one measuring 3.5mm wide and the other 8mm in working length. Both blades carry a cutting edge only at the terminal tip, while the lateral sides remain dull, a design that allows the blade to travel within the sulcus and sever the junctional attachment without inadvertently cutting the sulcular walls. As visible in the instrument profile, each end is angled differently from the central handle axis — one oriented for anterior access and the other for posterior approach. The round, ringed knurled handle supports a stable pen grip throughout the initial incision phase.

What separates this instrument from conventional periodontal knives is its end-cutting geometry. Unlike side-cutting knives that engage tissue along the blade length, this knife cuts only at the tip, making it suited for navigating within a sulcus 2mm deep without disturbing overlying tissue. Used alongside the Allen Periosteal Elevator PPAEL in the tunnel technique sequence, the end-cutting blade initiates intrasulcular access that periosteal elevators then extend into a full subperiosteal pouch, neither instrument accomplishes the procedure alone.

Periodontists use the Allen End-Cutting Knife during minimally invasive soft tissue grafting procedures — specifically the pouch and tunnel technique for root coverage. The surgeon inserts the blade intrasulcularly at each recession site, directing the tip apically from the base of the sulcus to the alveolar crest to sever the soft tissue attachment. This creates the initial sulcular entry point through which the pouch is developed laterally across multiple adjacent teeth without surface incisions.

The Periodontal Allen Instrument set represents a landmark in root coverage surgery. Leader Surgical produces this knife to consistent blade dimensions, verified stainless steel composition, and sterilization-safe finishing, supporting the demanding standards of modern mucogingival surgery.

When should I sharpen my Allen instruments?
Sharpen them at the first sign of dullness, which can be identified if the cutting edge reflects light (a sharp edge will not reflect light) or if the instrument “slides” over a plastic test stick instead of “grabbing” it.
