Ochsenbein bone chisel #1

Single-ended periodontal bone chisel with a 5 mm curved blade designed for precise interdental bone recontouring during osseous surgery.

Key Features:
• Single-ended chisel with 5 mm wide curved working blade
• Front-face bevel orientation for controlled interdental bone removal
• Semi-circular lateral notches allow access around tooth contours
• Multiple cutting surfaces including tip and notch edges
• Full-length diamond knurled handle for secure three-finger grip
• Handle diameter approximately 10 mm for stable control
• Overall instrument length approximately 160 mm (6.3 in)
• Surgical-grade stainless steel construction, autoclavable at 134°C

The Ochsenbein Bone Chisel #1 (LS1-375) is a single-ended periodontal chisel with a 5 mm wide curved blade, beveled on the front face of the blade curvature with cutting edges on the inward-facing surface. The blade carries two semi-circular notches along each lateral margin, allowing the working end to engage around the tooth contour and reach into the interdental area without contacting adjacent root surfaces. The handle features a full-length diamond-pattern knurled grip machined from surgical-grade stainless steel, measuring approximately 10 mm in diameter for secure three-finger control. Overall instrument length is 160 mm (6.3 inches).

The curved blade geometry of the Ochsenbein #1 differs from straight push chisels — the inward bevel orientation positions the cutting edge against the interdental bone crest rather than the tooth surface during bone removal strokes. The three beveled cutting surfaces — one at the tip and one along each semi-circular notch — allow the blade to simultaneously chisel and engage the interproximal bone margin. The stainless steel body withstands autoclave sterilization at 134°C repeatedly without blade deformation or edge dulling beyond normal clinical wear.

Periodontists use the Ochsenbein Bone Chisel #1 during osseous resective surgery to recontour alveolar bone margins, remove secondary palatal flaps, and make secondary sulcular incisions during flap procedures. The Ochsenbein Periodontal Chisel is also used to dislodge heavy supragingival calculus from proximal surfaces when embrasure spaces allow direct blade access, and to remove remaining periodontal fiber attachments from root surfaces after extraction.

Leader Surgical consistently delivers instruments where thoughtful design meets manufacturing discipline — producing tools that add real clinical value without overcomplicating what belongs in the tray.

What is the primary use of an Ochsenbein chisel?
It is used for reshaping and re-contouring bone margins (osteoplasty) during periodontal surgery. It is also effective for reflecting flaps or removing secondary palatal flaps.
